How to OMTA ?

How do we increase people’s ownership of public space by trusting its users with the cultural programming of this space?

We created OMTA to share cultural interventions with people for whom access to culture is not self-evident. We now develop methods with HOW TO OMTA to let users plan the cultural programming at Abattoir in a structural way and thereby increase their ownership of public space.

The project consists of 2 parts :

A cultural committee consisting of users of the Abattoir site and neighbourhood inhabitants (the many people who turn Abattoir into a unique and lively place every day) take ownership within this project. They make trips, get inspired and develop a method to filter artistic proposals according to their shared values. This happens during a series of think sessions. Their newly invented work method will be tested for the first time at the Cultureghem Festival in September ‘23. Adaptations to the method will happen after this first test.

A learning network of Flemish culture partners invites the committee to visit them. Every partner devotes themselves in their own way to democratise the decision making process surrounding artistic programming. The partners meet regularly to exchange information about specific themes, they provide feedback for each other’s search surrounding participative working methods. Demos guides the process and keeps track of all knowledge gained in their online knowledge centre.
